April 22, 2025 – The Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins and St. Simons Island Lighthouse Museum, along with the World War II Home Front Museum, have been honored by WorldAtlas as two of the “8 Best Museums in Georgia.” This recognition highlights their significant contributions to preserving Georgia’s rich aviation, maritime, and military history.
The Museum of Aviation, situated adjacent to Robins Air Force Base, stands as one of the largest aviation museums in the United States. It features over 85 historic aircraft and missiles, offering visitors an immersive experience into the evolution of aviation and the legacy of the U.S. Air Force.
On Georgia’s coast, the St. Simons Island Lighthouse Museum, operated by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society, offers a glimpse into 19th-century maritime navigation. Visitors can climb the 129 steps of the 1872 lighthouse for panoramic views and explore the restored keeper’s dwelling, which houses exhibits on lighthouse technology and coastal history.
Nearby, the World War II Home Front Museum, located in the historic East Beach Coast Guard Station, delves into Georgia’s pivotal role during World War II. Through interactive exhibits, guests can engage in activities such as plane spotting and Liberty shipbuilding, gaining insight into the state’s wartime contributions.
“We are delighted that two Trail partners have been recognized by WorldAtlas,” said Georgia WWII Heritage Trail Chair Ed Coleman. “This recognition not only celebrates the rich history preserved within these museums but also encourages residents and tourists alike to explore and appreciate Georgia’s diverse cultural heritage.”
