November 5, 2024 – The Georgia WWII Heritage Trail, comprising 11 museums and historic sites dedicated to preserving the stories and legacy of the Greatest Generation in Georgia, is hosting a series of events in commemoration of Veterans Day 2024. This collaborative effort underscores the significance of honoring the bravery and sacrifices of America’s veterans who served during World War II and beyond.
The trail’s partners will host unique programs and activities designed to engage and educate the public while paying homage to veterans across the state beginning Saturday, November 9. Highlights include:
Thomaston Goes to War (Thomaston, GA) – The public is invited to a Veterans Day program on November 9 at 11:00 AM at the Pettigrew White Stamps House Museum. The guest speaker will be Dan Brue, Colonel US Army ( Retired), followed by refreshments and tours of the WWII exhibits at the museum.
Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Airbase Georgia (Peachtree City, GA) – On November 10, CAF Airbase Georgia will host an open house from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, themed “Women at War,” honoring the vital roles women played during WWII. National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force (Pooler, GA) – In tribute to our nation’s heroes, the museum will open its doors on Monday, November 11, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM welcoming veterans with free admission. A special “Ringing of the Bells” ceremony will take place at 11:00 AM in the museum’s Memorial Garden near, an annual tradition to honor those who have served and sacrificed for our freedom.
National Infantry Museum (Columbus, GA) – One of the most visited and popular museums in the country is also known for impactful and memorable Veterans Day programs. This year’s observance will be held on November 11 at 11:00 AM and feature key note speaker Tony Mayne, Chief Executive Officer of Ranger for Life, as well as a tribute and paver dedication honoring those who served in the U.S. Army’s Infantry.
Additional Sites – The Curahee Military Museum, Museum of Aviation and Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame, National Prisoner of War Museum, St. Marys Submarine Museum, World War II Flight Training Museum, and World War II Home Front Museum, among others, will join the effort by offering tailored experiences that showcase the unique contributions of each site to WWII history. These include exhibits focused on wartime training, the civilian home front efforts, and the lives of service members who safeguarded the nation’s freedom.
This statewide initiative emphasizes collective remembrance, ensuring that the stories of service, resilience, and patriotism are passed down through generations.
“Veterans Day holds profound meaning across our communities. It’s a time to unite in gratitude, reflect on the past, and share the enduring legacies of those who served,” said Ed Coleman, Georgia WWII Heritage Trail Chairman. “We are honored to collaborate and provide these enriching experiences.”
